Hi Evan & all,
I have an old MAQ16/3 (midi only) that I use almost exclusivley to drive my Waldorf Pulse (wonderful synth). The MAQ is a very good sequencer but the user interface is a little unwieldy for live work because the parameters are many and if you decide to change say the note lenghth on the fly, you can end up making a mess of your sequence as the rotary encoder jumps through the options.
My modular has two A155 modules that I find very useful, not just for note sequences but in combination with the A156 quantiser, good for setting up complex envelopes and control voltage strings for controlling all sorts of things.
I have not tried chaining the two of them together to make longer sequences. If fact I'm not sure how you would do it, any suggestions
For real interaction I prefer the A155 primarily because you can flip the trigger switches to create holes in the sequence or say trigger is patched to the reset, at a flip of a switch the sequence length is easily adjusted, it sounds great when the sequence is bobbing along for eight notes (melodic) then it suddenly changes to the first 2 or 4 notes and pumps away. Great.
Hope this helps.
Regards
David

Hello. I'm new to the list. Just joined.
Good to find such a list exists!
I'm in Utrecht now, but I live in Australia normally.
I'm thinking of buying some Doepfer stuff:
Some modular bits, and possibly the MAQ 16/3.
My question to the list is this:
Can anyone help me out with a comparison between using the MAQ 16/3 and
either one, or a few, of the A-155 sequencers from the modular system.
For the same money I could get approximately the same features of CV and
Gate sequencing from one MAQ 16/3 as almost three of the A-155 sequencers.
My views and points:
Each A-155 has only 8 steps (with two rows of CV/Gate/Trigger sequencing),
while the MAQ has 16.
But, I can set up two A-155 modules to run one after the other, in turn,
providing me with a 16 step sequence (with two rows of CV/Gate/triggers).
Thus, I have something like the functionality of two thirds the MAQ 16/3.
A third A-155 would then bring it up to something like equal sequencing
capability in each system.
I suppose it basically boils down to whether you want extra MIDI functions,
or extra analogue interfacing, as you'll find on the A-155.
Has anyone on the list had experience with both these sequencers that can
share their personal feelings about the experience. I think just the
hands-on experience of creating with a particular piece of gear is very
important for me, so intuitive reflections will be appreciated.
Cheers,
Evan Lorden.
