Number one could be any number of things... time to trace the circuit path! It is
hopefully something fairly easy, like a ribbon wire flexed off to the volume
PCB.

This could be caused by any number of things. First step is easy - put two AA
batteries in the compartment. Another thing to look out for is the two wires
which connect the batteries to the PCB, if somebody has been hastily poking
about inside the unit, they might have disconnected one or both of those
wires. You'll need to open the unit to see, but its an easy fix.
My own unit was badly damaged, and had no memory for nearly two years!
One desperate night, my 707 was conected to a 12v AC wallwart, instead of a
DC one... It started to burn! Next day I replaced the 7805 voltage regulator,
which is what was smoking. Then the unit worked, but no memory. I had all
but given up hope. Then months later, Harry Bissell suggested it might be a
leaky diode, damaged from the AC. I replaced all of the small-signal diodes
(1N914, 1N4148, etc), the unit has worked ever since! Also, I replaced the two
AA batteries with a CR2032 lithium coin cell, fastened to a tiny piece of
perfboard which screws in place when the unit is closed.
Hope this helps!
