not sure about the hi hats, might be an obvious disconnection if you
open it up. if other sounds work, it's probably not a problem with
the actual rom chip. other than that, some things it could be:
- a scraped trace on the circuit board
- a broken jack
- a broken slider
- a broken wire where the main board connects to the volume board
- a dead capacitor in the envelope generator
basically i'd just look inside and see if anything looks obviously
broken or disconnected. you should be able to tell from the
schematics which components and general areas are associated with
the hi hats.
the memory batteries are just the 2 AAs in the little compartment on
the bottom of the drum machine. they might be dead, but i've also
owned 2 machines that wouldn't save even with fresh batteries. i
actually used one for a very long time loading and saving patterns
by tape every time i played a show or composed. it's a pretty
reliable method, the 707 is not as picky as the mmt8. the other
option is to get an overpriced memory cartridge on ebay.
