Could be the volume fader, or the hi-hat output jack. I think the individual
output jacks are wired so when you plug a cable into them, they take that
sound out of the main mix. There could be a short in the hi-hat jack.

Sounds like you need to replace the internal battery.
I havent' done this on a roland machine, but if you open yours up, you should
see either a nickel-sized watch battery, or a lithium-type battery. Write down
the part number, and google around for it. Mouser prolly has em.
ANY machine from that era that hasn't been serviced will need the battery
changed about now.....
