Looking at the schematic, the diode appears to be there to put a "decay tail" on the ride sound. The schematic only calls it out as a germanium diode. I'd try a 1N34A or a 1N60. 1N60 is easily available on eBay. I'd expect the higher voltage drop of a silicon diode to make SOME difference in the sound, but probably not much.
