I really don't like the sounds of the 707 very much, so it has never occurred to me to just
copy them. This is not a bad idea though. A straight dump should burn onto a new chip
with the weird scrambled addressing intact. Going over the ways the 707/727 clock data
out, the envelopes, the funky even/odd addresses for alternate sounds - I have concluded
that these machines are a complete PITA to make new ROMs for. Drop-in replacement
chips is the most convenient to use... but I barely even want to do it anymore, I'd rather
just make another board with 8-bit DACs and drum ROMs, then kludge the envelope data
from the 707 for some articulation. In the long run it's less of a headache for better
results.
But we do have two drop-in ROM sets, the oroginal 707 and 727 SRAM ICs! So I do now
intend to copy my four 707 SRAM chips. These are useless as direct rips for other
machines or audio samples, because they won't sound the same without the 707 envelope
circuitry.
It will take me a while to rip these, as I have other things going on now, and I am going to
then remove the ICs very slowly and carefully. These old PCBs can have a bit of moisture in
them, and I do not want to be wrecking the printed traces. Then I'll put sockets on the
board, try ripping the SRAM ICs, copying the data to new SRAMs to verify that they work.
And then of course post them. Naturally, I hope that somebody either rips the 727 sounds,
or offers a 727 for me to rip the sounds from! I can't afford to buy a 727 now, but that's
the whole idea - end-users can then choose which sound set they want!
More on this in a couple of weeks!
