ah, should have been more clear about this:
the cmos version of the 555 is a different chip altogether; it draws
a lot less power and doesn't soft sync to nearby 555s as badly. it
would probably work if you used the normal 555, but not as well. when
i started with normal 555s the pitches affected eachother (soft
sync). usually they are called 7555 or LMC555. radio shack carries
them, but often only like 3 at a time, luckily i live near 3 radio
shacks. the oscillator schematic is the standard one, i just made one
like this:
http://www.interq.or.jp/japan/se-inoue/e_ckt5_1.htm
except Ra=1k, Rb=100k pot, and C is like .1uF i
think. if you have a breadboard, it's probably a good idea to get an
oscillator circuit on there first and make sure it's working before
building them all onto a board and then having to wrench components
back out. if the oscillator doesn't go low enough for you, you can
attach more capacitors in parallel; putting two .1 uF in the same
spot will give you .2 uF i think.
hope you didn't waste a lot of $$ on the 555s. if it's any
consolation i have a bunch sitting around that i probably won't use
either since the cmos version is more useful.
