Keep in mind that since a pot is a 3 terminal device the analysis can get much more complicated, but if you're using one for a 'voltage mixing' of 5V and GND for example as long as the wiper is going into something with any sort of impedance (opamp input terminal for example) the equation I mentioned will work.
Anyhow, I don't think you'll need high power pots for any sort of modification. Power is:
P=V*I
If you were dissipating 1W from a 5V supply, the current would be 200mA, from the pot alone! So much for battery powered.
