You also have to make sure the overflow and grouping settings are turned off or the Matrix cannot send sysex properly. I'm not sure about the G1 thru G9 midi settings for midi guitar use. It's probably easiest to set the Matrix to midi channel 1 for starters.
Two more questions... When you select user patches 0-200 from the front panel do you hear different patches
I know this is a "duh" question but a dead battery can wipe these out. It seems like MQ would get jibberish for patches though. Can MQ play audition notes from the program
I'll try to get mine powered up and check out using Midiquest to load and save patches this weekend. It's been a while since I played with an Oberheim in my studio. I've been playing with virtual analogs like the microKORG XL, Darkstar, and Micron. I should compare them.....
